In the last two years, we have met at this fountain next to the local church ⛪️.
When everyone has gathered (around 5 pm), we walk further down the street and pick up the torches!
I usually like to go a little early and grab a bite to eat at the Landgasthof Engel, or (I believe) we grabbed a beer at the Hotel Stadt Mainz this last time 🍺. The town of Ingelheim am Rhein would also be a beautiful extra stop while you’re in the area 👌.
You could easily make a day trip out of it 😍!
Lighting your torch is step 1 🔥.
Step 2 is to take numerous photos with your torch 🗽.
Then we were off 🚶♀️!
This is a family-friendly village affair 👩👧👦.
I even saw someone with their doggo 🐕!
It’s the coolest thing, walking with the village through the vineyards 🍇.
Remember, this is a German hike 🇩🇪!
So, expect at least one hill climb 🧗!
The route isn’t too long, though. It’s around a 30-45 minute walk, and you’re back! They also keep a slower pace so the elderly and children can keep up.
At one point, we even walked through the vineyards to our projected path.
The route was a little different this year due to icy conditions 🧊. Last year, we walked through the vineyards and stopped in the fields at an excellent little location to eat and drink. This year, we returned to the village and ended the festivities there.
Once we returned to the village, we placed our torches in the snow and waited for the food and drinks to be ready!
Don’t forget to bring a cup/mug 🥤.
This is a bring-your-own-cup affair.
Everyone agreed this is one of the best brats we have ever had 🌭!
One of the German ladies even offered us bread dough that you place on a stick and cook in the fire (like a smore) 🍞. I thought that was pretty neat! You just have to make sure you don’t burn your bread.
Look at that fire pit 🔥!
Lots of fire themes here ❤️🔥.
