Hiking with Llamas in Germany: A Unique Journey into Nature's Beauty 🦙

Updated: Jan 13

This past weekend, I orchestrated a llama hike with the Ladies in the KMC (Child Free Fun), and it was an absolute blast! Imagine petting, feeding, and strolling through the forests of Germany all while leading your very own llama! If you're seeking a one-of-a-kind adventure in Germany, look no further – this is it."

"How do I book Allie!? I'm so ready!!!"

You have two options. You can join one of their already pre-planned outings on their website (when they are offered). Or you can send them an e-mail 📧 (listed above) and schedule a private tour. If you do schedule a private tour, you will need to IBAN the full payment over prior to your hike. So please keep that in mind.

They have three locations to choose from on their website:

Annweiler, Völkersweiler, Waldhambach

Before you plan your adventure, please keep a few things in mind:

It often isn't all that pretty in the winter ❄️. Everything is dead, wet, muddy, and grey. However, I was running out of time here in Germany and decided to just go for it!

Delaying for the "perfect time in life" can mean missing out on incredible opportunities. Therefore, I always try to seize the moment, embrace imperfection, and live! No matter the season, weather, or time 💯.

Speaking of wet and muddy... Please wear waterproof shoes suitable for hiking 🥾 (and other rain gear as needed). Especially during this time of year (winter). Otherwise, it may be a very miserable time. No one likes to be wet and cold 🥶!

Don't walk a llama by yourself, unless you really realllyyy want to. We were advised to share our llamas, and I'm so glad we did. There were no issues with aggression or spitting, but they are obsessed with eating and are quite stubborn and strong. They will try to eat everything as you walk, even dragging your halfway across the meadow for the "best spot 😆." It was nice to be able to hand the reins over to my partner when I got a little fatigued or wanted to take photos/videos 📸.

In the photo above, you'll see a lady walking with her arms out to the side. They had a younger llama who upon realizing we were returning home, decided she wanted to run 🏃‍♂️💨! They were having trouble getting her to slow down, which was quite funny. However, without a partner, it would have been very difficult to assert control (our guide helped too of course). So, share your llamas people!

For this reason, I would always suggest at least 1 adult assist each child with their llama.

How difficult is the hike?

It's Germany y'all. If you go on a German hike, you are almost guaranteed to have a significant portion being an uphill climb. The hike in Annweiler was no exception. Practically the entire first half was an uphill climb 😅. They did, however, give us two breaks to let the llamas eat and to share facts about llamas on the way up. So that was nice for those who were struggling a little and we learned quite a bit!

When we arrived, I realized that the location appears to be made for nature themed vacations/getaways. If you are looking for a weekend getaway in the warmer months, and love hiking, this might be a great option for you! I'll list below a few features the area offers:

Minigolf:

Reall neat looking holiday homes:

Trifels Castle:

Zoos:

Kleine Kalmit Nature Reserve:

Castle Ruins:

Outdoor Pool:

At the end we dropped off the llamas in their enclosure and they gave us carrots to feed them with. As you can imagine, this was a big hit with the llamas (and the ladies)!

Then we went indoors to their little shop, sat down, and had a little glühwein! I had requested this when booking, and it was 2 euros each. They even had llama beer, which was 4.50 euros per bottle (with pfand).

Overall, it was quite the lovely time, and I'm so glad I was able to fit it in before leaving 🦙

❤️.
