Bernkastel-Kues Wine Festival: Weinfest der Mittelmosel 2023

Updated: Sep 4, 2023

Bernkastel-Kues is a charming, quintessential German town. Its location on the Mosel River and scenic sloping vineyards make it a popular destination. Add in a wine festival, and you bet I'll be there!

This is hands down my favorite wine festival in Germany (so far). It ends on September 4th, so you still have time to make it out! They have a firework show on Saturday at 9:00 p.m., so if the weather permits, I'd plan to go then! Just be prepared for the inevitable crowds.

We (my friend Nichole and I) checked into our lodging around 1:00 p.m.

I chose this bed and breakfast based on location, price, free cancellation, and availability. It was around a 20-minute walk to the festival, and at only 83 euros per night with a hearty breakfast included, I didn't hesitate to book.

We checked in, threw our belongings in our room, and headed to lunch!

Burgruine Landshut - Landshut Castle Ruins - Bernkastel Kues - Mosel Valley Germany

We first ran into this beautiful view of Burgruine Landshut (Landshut Castle Ruins). Which, naturally, turned into a mini photo session. I had to take advantage of the beautiful weather!

Along the way, you could see the beginnings of the small amusement park set up across the river from the festival that caters more to children. It wasn't open last night, but I believe it will be tonight. Family Day is actually today (Friday) and offers a live DJ and free rides for the little ones.

I doubt this information will be helpful to you since I won't be posting this for another hour or two. Sorry!

Shopping Purchase - Purse Clock - Bernkastel Kues Germany

On my way into the festival, I saw this purse clock in the window at Boutique Karin Mode, and I just had to have it! I thought it was this cute, unique find, and while I still love it, it's not unique at all. It's made in China (le sigh...). So, if you want one of your own, you can buy it at the boutique or probably purchase it for cheaper online. It's neat, though. A battery powers the clock, and the purse is decently spacious. I can't wait to find the perfect outfit to pair this new addition with!

I also found this lovely green and white poncho at Modehaus Hees. Things are a little expensive in some of the stores, and I'm not much of a shopper, but these two items caught my eye, and I couldn't help myself. The cape is rather perfect for the fall weather that is coming!

Schutzenhaus - German Restaurant - Panoramic View of Bernkastel-Kues Germany

See that building in the middle up on the hill there? That's Schützenhaus! Where we went for lunch. It's an uphill climb (we walked), and while it looks far away, it isn't. From the bridge, it only takes 10-15 minutes (depending on your fitness level). You may be able to drive up there at times. However, I have never figured out how (I definitely wouldn't suggest trying during this busy festival).

It's a great place, and I've never had complaints from anyone I have taken there.

You don't necessarily go there for the food, though.

You go for the view!

It offers a panoramic view of the town, and it's absolutely stunning. If you don't visit this restaurant, you must at least stop by the castle for the same view (a little bit further up). It also has a restaurant that offers food and drinks as well.

We ordered the pretzel and gouda appetizer, fish nuggets, and schnitzel with a champignon (mushroom) cream sauce. The staff were amiable and attentive. A pleasant start to our afternoon!

Afterward, it was time to walk back down.

On your way, don't forget to stop at this scenic spot that you will find on your right-hand side. Great place for a photo-op!

The grapes are coming in, and it's the perfect time of year in the valley to enjoy the beautiful greenery the vineyards provide.

The first order of business was to find the wine (duh)! Throughout the festival, you'll discover most of the food along the main street and wine vendors all over. There are about two extra areas with stages you can find if you turn right off the main road (I didn't even know they existed last year). One of them is right where the advent calendar house is. Here, you will find stages set up for nighttime entertainment.

Note: Most of the wine featured is of the Riesling variety due to Bernkastel-Kues' valley production and specialization in the Riesling grape. However, some reds and rosés are offered (and beer as well) if you don't care for it.

For the first few hours, we were lucky enough to be greeted with these beautiful blue skies, but unfortunately, the weather began to take a turn for the worse.

However, we didn't let bad weather ruin our day! We walked back to the car, grabbed our rain gear, and returned to party on!

Nothing a glass of wine won't fix!

As the Germans like to say: "There is no bad weather, just bad clothing."

As the sun began to fade, and the rain rolled in, we searched for a spot to sit that would enable us to enjoy the live entertainment scheduled for 8:30 p.m.

We found that perfect spot at a pub called Bitchen. It offered outdoor seating with umbrellas close to the main stage (near the advent calendar house). Funny enough, I wasn't feeling wine yesterday. So, we switched to beer (hefeweizen). Don't judge me!

Note: The gentleman who served us failed to mention at first that there was a pfand on the beer glass. So, when we paid, we were confused about why it was so expensive. You usually don't find pfands at formal bars and restaurants, but I'm sure it was because of its proximity to the event. Also, don't forget to ask for it back before you leave!

We were in for quite the surprise when the music began. It was ALL in English! In fact, at all three stages throughout the night, I don't recall hearing one German song. The songs were all over the place as well—Aretha Franklin, Journey, Uncle Kracker, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, etc. No set themes. Just fun music! We were having the time of our lives and enjoying the novelty and variety.

Note: I'm not saying it is terrible that they only played primarily American music in my native language; I simply find it funny that it tends to be the main form of entertainment no matter where I go. You don't quite expect to be in a foreign country and be treated to an American concert! It happens all the time, though.

This is where my tale ends. We drank a few beers, ate more food (bratwurst / käsespätzle), listened to fun music, and danced. Thoroughly loving every moment.

Enjoy the video I have linked above, which is a compilation of our day!

Don't forget that when ordering a glass of wine, they add on the "pfand." This is the charge for the glass, and when you bring it back, you will be refunded. If you break the glass or decide you want to take it home, you (obviously) will not get it back.

I would park in a parking garage across the river or at any parking lot nearby. The parking lots on the side of the festival will either be blocked off or taken, so I wouldn't plan to park there. We parked at an open parking lot beside our bed and breakfast. If you arrive later in the day, traffic will become increasingly worse and parking hard to find. I highly suggest making this a day trip and going early to avoid any hassles. Plenty of parking spots are available in numerous areas; just getting there can be an issue. There is really only one way in and out of the town.

Bernkastel-Kues is not directly accessible by train. If you choose that route, you must take the train and then the bus. Honestly, the easiest way is to drive.

Entrance fee?

No! Most of the festivals in Germany are always free to enter.

Should I bring cash?

YES! Depending on how much you would like to spend, I would bring at least 50-100 euros (smaller bills and change!!). Most of these festivals in Germany are still cash only.
